Mother-Baby Behavioural Sleep Laboratory
Professor James J. McKenna’s Mother-Baby Behavioral Sleep Laboratory studies how sleeping environments reflect and respond to family needs—in particular how they affect mothers, breastfeeding, and infants’ physiological and psychological well-being and development. This website is intended to give scientifically –based information, provide downloadable scientific articles, as well as provide access to educational PowerPoint presentations and television appearances about Dr McKenna's work on mother-infant cosleeping and breastfeeding. These various resources explain the basis of the “cosleeping debate” and answer FAQs concerning infant sleep and feeding issues, with an emphasis on mother-infant cosleeping, breastfeeding, SIDS/SUDI risk factors and prevention, all in relationship to sleeping arrangements including separate-surface-cosleeping and bedsharing.

If you need support, encouragement or breastfeeding information, your local peer support group can help. These organisations offer telephone help-lines staffed by volunteer mothers who have received basic breastfeeding and counselling training. They are there to listen and support you during difficult times, and recognise situations where specialised help is required. They can play an important role in the prevention of problems, and studies show that women who benefit from their services enjoy longer, more positive breastfeeding experiences. These support groups hold mom-baby meetings, where you can meet other mothers and share in a respectful, open and relaxed atmosphere. You don't need to have a problem to take advantage of their presence!
